A half day in sunny Penedes

Penedès is one of Spain’s most known wine districts and is located 45 minutes south of Barcelona. The nearby Mediterranean Sea, the many hours of sunlight with mild winters and hot summers make this into an attractive cultivation area. It also attracts many tourists and is one of the most visited wine districts after Rioja in the west part of Spain.

Here they have a long tradition of wine making. In the Vilafranca wine museum you can see historical tools indicating grape growing already by the 4th century B.C. When the Romans came to the area new varieties were introduced. The area was perfectly located between Rome and Cadiz in today’s Andalusia where the Romans did their trading. Penedès therefore became an important place for both red and white wine production.

Today you find many well known and also unknown winemakers in Penedès. Wine makers who want to drive this wine tradition forward. The single most known product is the Spanish champagne; the cava. Here you find 95% of the Spanish cava production. Cava produced by great wineries such as Codorniu or Freixenet. Additionally you also find excellent red and white wines, the most famous ones beeing made by Torres.

Apart from these great wineries you also find many smaller wineries with lovely, more exclusive wines. These wines are often exported and some part is sold to the local Spanish market. Join Wine Experience to one of these smaller, off-the-beaten-track wineries. Places where you get a more personal reception, often you meet the wine maker himself. Places where you get to touch the vines. Smell the soil. Followed by a tour through the wine making process. Smell the oak barrels while you enjoy the wine sampling in the end of the tour!

How much time does the tour take? You should plan for 3 hours from that you leave Barcelona until you are leaving the winery after the visit. You have the option of doing a day visit or an afternoon visit. If you wish to visit two wineries you should count with one full day, 8-10 hours including a lunch break.

How do I get there? We can arrange your private bus tour from your hotel to the winery. We can also recommend suitable local transportation, normally working well and which also is more beneficial for the environment. Of course you can also arrange your own transportation.

Feeling hungry after the wine tour? If you wish we end the visit on one of the local restaurants next to the winery so that you can enjoy the Catalan cuisine served with the excellent regional wines. There are many restaurants to choose from!

One day trip to the wineries of Priorat

Priorat is a small but important wine district south west of Barcelona. It was more or less a forgotten place until the 1980´s when five experienced winemakers decided to start producing quality wine there. The arrival of Alvaro Palacios, Carles Pastrana, René Barbier, José Luis Pérez and Daphne Glorian changed the development of Spanish wine industry forever. Nowadays the district is regarded as one of the most interesting wine producers in the world.

Priorat is located two hours away from Barcelona, heading south towards Tarragona. We will follow the Costa Dorada-coast through Tarragona and down to the national park of Montsant. We offer you to visit two wineries including both D.O. Priorat and D.O. Montsant. These wineries produce half to full bodied, powerful, spicy and tasteful red quality wines that are often aged in barrel and with typical taste of plum, blueberry and dark chocolate.

You will first get a tour on the two wineries with wine tasting together with the winemakers, before we end the visit on a local restaurant where you will enjoy the local cuisine and of course the wonderful Priorat wines!

You choose the transport, either with bus or with train from Barcelona. Of course you can also arrange your own transport if you so prefer. If you choose the bus alternative the bus leaves at 09.00 from Barcelona and you are back in town at 19.00.

Trek & Wine Experience

Get deep into the heart of the Priorat wine region with this easy walk in the surroundings of the Carthusian monastery, the architects of the nowadays Priorat wine region, reaching hidden spots of great beauty still being cultivated with vines, at the foothills of the massive walls of Montsant Natural Park. We combine this walk with an optional guided visit to the Carthusian monastery and with a guided visit with wine tasting of the DOQ Priorat Certified Appellation of Origin (DOQ) in one of the historical wine cellars of Priorat, with its wine still aging in the ancient Carthusian rooms. We can enjoy the delicious local gastronomy in some of the nearby restaurants. There is an alternative cultural excursion by minibus to the walk.

Visit Tarragona and a winery in Priorat

Nowadays the district is regarded as one of the most interesting wine producers in the world.

Priorat is located two hours away from Barcelona. We will follow the Costa Dorada-coast one hour south to the province capital of Tarragona where we do the first stop.

Tarragona was once upon a time one of the most important cities in the Roman Spain. The Romans used the city as a starting point for their conquests on the Iberian Peninsula. There are many 2000-year old ancient remains from this time; the remains of a Forum, a Roman theatre, well kept parts of the city wall as well as an aqueduct.

After a guided walk in Tarragona we continue to Priorat. We will visit one of our selected Priorat wineries. These wineries produce half to full bodied, powerful, spicy and tasteful red quality wines that are often aged in barrel and with typical taste of plum, blueberry and dark chocolate.

We end the tour with wine tasting together with the winemaker, before we enjoy a Catalan lunch on a local restaurant where you of course will be served the wonderful Priorat wines!

For this option you will need a bus for the transportation. You can arrange it on your own or ask us.
